"Evolution requires sacrifice."
— XGaster's main ideology

XGaster is a major character in XTale and Underverse. He is the sole creator of the XTale universe. XGaster had lost complete motivation towards creating a perfect world, but after his visit by Ink!Sans, XGaster invests more time to creating "the perfect story" for his universe. This motivation causes tensions, not just within his own universe, but to many others soon afterwards.

History[]

Before XTale[]

Not much about XGaster's origin is known. When the XTale first formed in the Doodle Sphere, he, alongside a Frisk and Chara, came into existence alongside it. At this point in time, he already had his unique SOUL, and did not have a name yet. Despite likely not being biologically related, he considered the two children he came into existence with his own.[1]

Timeline 0[]

After many tries to create a unique world for his two children to live in, XGaster is in realization that he doesn't know how to and believes he's wasting the power his SOUL contains. Feeling that he isn't good enough for his children, he tries to destroy his own SOUL, in hopes that it will free them from the universe.

Ink!Sans, after recently making a truce with Error!Sans, senses a disturbance in XGaster's universe. Without Error knowing, he goes to investigate the AU, only to find a man and his two children. He learns of the problem, and decides that he'll help the owner of this AU in the same way he used to help creators before they abandoned the multiverse. He and Ink became friends, with the latter showing him the multiverse for any ideas for his universe. Ink shows him and his two children many AUs, including Underswap, which helps give him inspiration for his own AU. Sometime during this trip, he is given a name: XGaster.[1]

Timeline I[]

Now with a new name and lots of inspiration, he creates the first timeline of his universe. He uses the special power within his SOUL to create versions of many characters he saw in other universes to become friends with his children, including: Papyrus, Sans, Toriel, Asgore, Alphys, and Undyne. He allowed his children, Chara and Frisk, to live with Asgore, Toriel, and later Asriel.

Time went on normally for many years after that, with everyone living happy lives together. XGaster watched the two grow up over time, while working with Alphys to create entries for the universe as time progressed. He was content with the way the timeline was, believing his job was done, before he realized it was imperfect. He told his children that the world had to be improved, and completely overwrote the existing timeline using the power of his SOUL.

Timeline II[]

Ink visits XGaster again after he restarted the first timeline, and he questions about what happened to the universe. XGaster reveals to Ink the true power of his SOUL: the OVERWRITE button. Ink is skeptical at first, but XGaster tries to reassure him by explaining that it won't break his truce. He describes it as a sort of game, an experiment, and Ink agrees.

XGaster creates the second timeline using the OVERWRITE button with a similar structure to the first, but is upset when Chara says he doesn't want to do it again. Although he would watch the timeline play out once more, XGaster began to feel that it will end up the same way as the first. He tries to introduce death to the timeline by killing Asgore and Sans, the two of them grown close with Chara and Frisk, believing it would make it more interesting. He briefly doubts his decision, but stays resolute on his ideal that "Evolution requires sacrifice". Chara tries to confront XGaster about what he did, but XGaster insists that he must OVERWRITE this timeline if he wants to see his friends again. Chara lets him, and he overwrites the second timeline.

Timeline III[]

He creates a third timeline, this time based off of the Underswap AU, in which most of the characters' positions are swapped. He yet again creates a very similar scenario as the past two timelines, in which Frisk and Chara are passed off to the Dreemurr family, and sees if the Underswap basis will change anything. After only two days of the AU existing, he overwrote it, realizing it would play out the same way as the other two. After Frisk and Chara call him an "insecure old man", he brushes them off, claiming that he doesn't need their opinion.

Timeline IV[]

XGaster creates yet another timeline, this time the fourth one. Frisk and Chara are left to live on their own, and he leaves them be for years. One day, he waits in the two's home, awaiting Frisk. He ambushes Frisk, grabbing him with one of his hands. He begins another experiment, this time, attempting to see what would happen if he used OVERWRITE on one of the two humans. He starts a Genocide Route.

The experiment is a success, and Frisk begins to kill every inhabitant of the AU. Not long after, he finds Chara staring in horror at the chaos, and sends Frisk after him. He begins to walk away, uncaring of either brother's fate. Before he can walk too far, he senses something, and turns around, only to be punched by Chara. Chara uses the power of RESET for the first time, bringing the timeline back to the beginning of the day.

XGaster, displeased that the RESET button was used, decides to overwrite the timeline once more, this time creating a specific timeline to punish the two.

Timeline V[]

For the fifth timeline, XGaster specifically made it so that all characters in the timeline would have an unnatural hatred towards the two humans. This was his form of punishment towards Chara and Frisk after the events of the previous timeline. He departed from the universe for some time, possibly investigating an oddity in the main universe.

When he returned, he discovered that Alphys had given a part of his entries to Muffet, who convinced Chara to fight back in the previous timeline. He kills Alphys, planning to overwrite her into a loyal servant. The disappearance of Alphys attracts the attention of Chara and Undyne, and XGaster realizes that the humans managed to befriend Undyne. At first he believes he forgot to program them to hate them, but after encountering them, he then comes to the conclusion that the humans' free will allowed them to swap Undyne to their side, giving her false hopes of defeating their creator.

When Undyne demands that he tell them where Alphys is, XGaster shows her lifeless body to them, claiming that she isn't a problem anymore. He then request Undyne to give "HIS humans" if she doesn't want to end up like Alphys. This ends up starting a fight of XGaster against Undyne and Chara. Chara unleashes a barrage of magic knives on him, and this seems to confirm XGaster's theory on the power of determination. Despite losing the fight, XGaster acts unaffected, expressing his desire for part of Chara's determination. He then executes his plan of overwriting Alphys, who summons parts of the code of previous timelines (incomplete versions of Asriel, Asgore, Toriel, and Muffet) to attack Undyne.

Timeline VI[]

As the fight in the previous timeline continues, the OVERWRITE button is used multiple times, and in the process, a new timeline is created. Undyne was killed, and Chara, thoroughly defeated by the amalgamates, is vulnerable, allowing XGaster to proceed with his plan. He uses the spikes he can spawn inside of his hands to drain half of Chara's determination SOUL, and swap it with half of his own. This leaves XGaster with half of his SOUL his own, and the other half Chara's determination.

Timeline VII[]

XGaster creates a new timeline, this time to test the power of his newfound power of determination. He experiments with the powers a little bit, letting Chara play with his new ability to OVERWRITE, leading to Frisk dying multiple times. He finds the effects emotions had on Frisk's soul interesting, with the soul having lost its trait; he gives it to Alphys to store for later experimentation.

Just as XGaster begins to dispose of Frisk, he begins to cry, and soon realizes that because his and Chara's souls are shared, their tears are connected. He questions why Chara is crying, and Chara responds saying he wants Frisk back. XGaster suggests to him that he should create a new human to accompany Chara, since he believes Frisk is useless without his determination, however Chara argues that XGaster also wants Frisk back as well. Understanding that Chara discerned that through the link between their souls, he decides to agree to Chara's wishes, and begins the X-Event experiment.

Timeline VIII[]

XGaster creates yet another timeline, this time as a testing grounds for Frisk's new abilities as the X-Event. He teaches Frisk how to use the Overwrite button, and departs from XTale once again for an unknown location, likely investigating the oddity in the main universe. He leaves Frisk to create something with his new powers with help from Alphys.

When he returns, XGaster discovers that Frisk has created an alternate version of Mettaton in his absence. He is confused by Frisk's decision to give the creation a weapon, questioning why Frisk would need a guardian. In the end, he deems the creation acceptable, and then orders Frisk to destroy it. He reiterates his main ideal that "Evolution requires sacrifice" to Frisk, and is surprised to hear Frisk's outburst against it. Suddenly, XGaster is attacked by the guardian, and ends up losing his arm to the sudden attack. Mettaton is soon thereafter killed by him with Alphys' help, and leaves her to clean up the mess while he fixes his arm. XGaster has his first visible sight towards the future sometime afterwards, in which he gets a glimpse of the events of Underverse 0.4.

Timeline IX[]

Ink returns to the XTale universe to visit XGaster. XGaster reveals to Ink that his part of their game is complete, but since he was now in fear that his actions in the past may have future consequences, he asks Ink to keep a vial containing half of his soul for safe-keeping. Ink expresses shock at the idea, but XGaster reassures him since he can rely on Chara's determination instead. He then wishes for Ink to watch over the experiment during Phase 2 of their game.

For the rest of the ninth timeline, XGaster remains in quiet solitude in a forest, unable to use his OVERWRITE powers and exhausted due to half of his soul missing. He orders Frisk to not interfere with the lives of this timeline and only watch. However, when Frisk is caught by Alphys for talking with Papyrus, and inadvertently resulting in him going to the forest with the XTale version of Greater Dog and giving back Frisk their now broken heart locket, XGaster grounds Frisk. Papyrus later returns to fix the fence that he broken down, but finds it fixed already. XGaster orders Papyrus to leave him alone for fears of being dangerous, while Papyrus counters him by asking if he was truly evil or not.

Later, Frisk escapes from XGaster, and tries to sway Papyrus into fighting against XGaster. When the two confront him, Papyrus asks if what he had done was true, to which XGaster confirms. Knowing that he could not fight the X-Event with only half a soul, XGaster resorts to taunting the two, leading to the X-Event pulling both the OVERWRITE and RESET button. As the two remain in conflict, Papyrus reflects that the somber mood of the timeline is of their fault and asking them to not give them any real feelings. XGaster soon finds another vision from this, while Frisk resets.

Timeline X[]

After the last timeline was completely reset by Frisk, XGaster wakes up to a child Alphys. Alphys affirms XGaster that what Frisk had done ultimately changed both time and space. The two later find a child Sans and Papyrus. XGaster decides to the adopt the two brothers, becoming their father. However XGaster remained somewhat ignorant towards the two. When he ask Sans to pull the X-Event down, he soon realizes that what Sans was doing was diverging from his intended goal and orders Sans to stop. Later, when the X-Event ends up overwriting several citizens in order to kill itself, XGaster grasps in pain. In the result of this, he orders Asgore to form the royal guards in order to protect the X-Event. He urges Sans and Papyrus to join the royal guard after realizing the potential they have for him.

Years later, XGaster continues to monitor the X-Event using the royal guards, but starts to acts suspicious after noticing Sans glimmering in fear. After doing an analysis, he quickly discovers that the X-Event had been using Sans' genocide code in order to arrange for the takeover of his own soul. After the X-Event forces Sans to kill him onstage during a peace ceremony, XGaster intervenes, and eventually has to reset in order for the ceremony to continue. But this results in him struggling to withhold his determination, and has to heal up as Alphys writes down his next few entries for him.

After the X-Event torments Sans, XGaster appears once again to impale the X-Event, and resets the timeline. However, the X-Event realizes that XGaster had been going for, and by overwriting, they stage a coup against XGaster using the cast of XTale against him. When XGaster refused to give the X-Event the location of his other half of the Overwrite button, he loses his legs, and once Cross comes up, he proceeds to throw XGaster out towards a forest. Alphys catches up to him, and XGaster tells her to keep his entries safe. He slowly fades away from the universe, but manages to live on within the Doodle Sphere with Alphys as Cross inadvertently kills the universe of XTale in his lust for power.

Between XTale and Underverse[]

Sometime after he resurfaces in a corrupted form, XGaster meets up with his Classic self. Gaster calls XGaster out tells him to face reality. XGaster angrily rebukes this, becoming stubborn and walking away, claiming he is unwelcome in the void.

Underverse[]

0.1[]

XGaster makes a brief appearance in Part 4, where after Sans is knocked down from the volleyball Undyne slammed into him.

0.2[]

Sans talks with Cross regarding the events that had transpired during his picnic, and asks him if XGaster were on the same page as his plan.

0.3[]

XGaster makes multiple appearances throughout Underverse 0.3. He's seen among a crowd of monsters when Cross slashed Underswap!Toriel's right eye. He appears once again when X-Event!Chara is about to impale Ink, overwriting Underswap!Sans and Underswap!Papyrus, saying in wingdings "YOUR CREATIVITY IS A SHAME", and more wingdings text appears throughout the battle, saying "YOU DON'T DESERVE THE GIFT OF CREATING" and "YOU ONLY HAVE THE GIFT TO KNOW THAT YOUR USELESS LIFE IS NOT GOING TO END WELL"; he appears again when Underswap!Sans tells him what has harmed X-Event!Chara won't heal him; he's also seen side-by-side with Ink when X-Event!Chara tells Underswap!Sans that he's mad at him and he makes multiple comments throughout the entire battle.

XGaster appears again in the background in the trees of Underswap!Papyrus' second memory frame when he is talking about how it's him and his brothers' time to go and Underswap!Papyrus attempts to sacrifice himself.

Xtra Scene 2[]

XGaster appears again in Error's dream; after Ink eliminates Asgoro and Sins, XGaster proceeds to inform Error that this game is getting more interesting, and that he needs to wake up.

0.4[]

XGaster's role has been much expanded upon, looking at what Error has caused and the damages the X-Event has concurred. He's very upset at what they've done to Underswap (for Pragmatic reasons, of course), and especially irritated when the cast from Underfell tried to stop his assistant from continuing her work.

After Ink frees his soul from the vial, XGaster proceeds to hand Ink a new paintbrush and trap Error in his own dimension after he refused to negotiate with them. Reuniting his other half of his soul from the X-Event, he lets XTale!Chara die, before proceeding to kill off Underswap!Sans and Underfell!Sans and transporting (Or killing) Sans back to his own universe. Knowing what he's doing, which is to create a single universe, he gives XTale!Chara another chance, revives Cross, and simply leaves him alone after reminding him to come and join his puppets.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

His appearance bears an X strap around his coat and shirt, and a belt with an X strap around his pants. During his time with the determination he gained from XTale!Frisk and XTale!Chara, his appearance in Underverse is a semi-melted version of his real self. Thanks to X-Event!Frisk, he has no legs, which doesn't matter as he can still float around to move.

Near the end of Timeline X, he begins to melt due to the excess determination in his body. Throughout Season 1 of Underverse, he holds this melted appearance. Once he regains his original soul, he stops melting, though not without changes to his original body. In his Corrupted form, he has a sharper grin, narrower eyes, claw-like hands, and glitches where his legs once were.

Personality[]

XGaster is more of a mysterious character, showing his isolation to the main characters except in special times, such as when XTale!Sans attempts to murder XTale!Frisk on stage. He's also a very clever man; knowing that everyone would soon revolt against him, he took his own soul and handed it to Ink for safekeeping. Despite this, he shows much more borderline sociopathic and abusive tendencies towards his children, seeing them more as "experiments" than anything else. He barely cares about anyone's else feelings, and only wants them to fall into his own hands, using them as a puppet to his advantage.

He is also shown to be extremely obsessed with control and shows several traits of narcissism such as ranting about his kids for fighting back and accusing them of being "ungrateful." He also calls the other universes that aren't his own "garbage." This all shows that beneath his stoic and calculating demeanor, he is mentally a child who sees his universe as a toy box.

The animated prequels display that he was once a genuinely kind being who simply wanted to make a perfect world for his children. However, as time went on, he shed every redeeming quality he once had and became more cruel as he grew more desperate for his "perfect world." He even displays several signs of outright sadism, finding the anguish his sons had after he killed Asriel and Asgore "exciting," and after brainwashing Frisk into a killer, mocks Chara, saying "Frisk wants to play with you." The closest thing XGaster has to a redeeming quality in the modern day is his friendship with Ink, but even then he isn't above manipulating him.

In XTale IX, he seems to briefly show a soft side again after interacting with Papyrus, saying how not having the power of the world gave him a new view of it before mentioning that he "hated it" and saying how he had gone too far to stop now, going back to his old self.

After XGaster's Future vision shows him the events of 0.4 as well as what leads him to it, he becomes obsessed with ensuring those events will happen. He also shows quite a bit of determination, as his goals are regularly shown to be tiring and exhausting yet he continues working toward them.

Abilities[]

XGaster is the sole creator of XTale, allowing him to use the Overwrite button at will. However, he loses some control over it after he sent half of his soul to the X-Event. This allows him to Reset, but destroys any chance of using the Overwrite button. His Reset button doesn't even restart the whole timeline again; it brings back everyone to their normal position, but fails to erase any memories that the characters had before.

XGaster, as the creator of his works, can also control the inhabitants of XTale if necessary. This can be shown if the inhabitant uses his own eyes instead of their own. If fighting alone, XGaster can use his multiple hands to stab his enemies with.

Due to the power of his soul, XGaster has the power of foresight, which gives him the ability to see visions of the future. His foresight is not all-seeing, as he can only see glimpses into the future, which sometimes leads to unexpected events such as Asgore getting poisoned in Birthday Party or Fatal_Error trying to steal his code in Underverse 0.7 Part 2.

Trivia[]

  • The "X" in XGaster is not a prefix, but rather a part of his name, unlike the other XTale characters.[2]
  • It was mentioned by Jakei that his first and last name are both "XGaster", however it is unknown if this is canonical information or just a joke.[2]
  • XGaster has a fear of mirrors.[3]
